Science is our best friend

June 24, 2014
In the future, we have to make a living out of knowledge and, therefore, we have to build bridges between science and the public, said the Minister for Higher Education and Science at the opening of ESOF2014.

We must build bridges between science and society. This was the message from Minister for Higher Education and Science, Sofie Carsten Nielsen, at the opening of ESOF2014 which is Europe's most important conference for the presentation, discussion and communication of new research.

The purpose of the conference is to share knowledge and offer a platform where organisations, institutions, politicians and companies can meet and debate research-related topics.

- Knowledge should be made available so that as large a part of the public as possible gets access to the research results. ESOF provides specific Danish researchers with the opportunity of meeting some of the world's leading researchers here at their home ground. This is a little bit like staging the World Cup in research, says Sofie Carsten Nielsen.

ESOF2014 was initiated with an opening ceremony on Sunday 22 June. Minister for Higher Education and Science, Sofie Carsten Nielsen, and President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, were present at the opening.

The opening ceremony took place on the 22 June in the Carlsberg City District in Copenhagen with the participant of Her Majesty Queen Margrethe and President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, among others.

- Science does indeed matter for the future of Europe. Not just to a large audience such as yours, but to everyone in our societies. Because I believe that our social and economic progress and many of the solutions to today's problems will come from science. And I would even say that "The future of Europe is science", said José Manuel Barroso.
