Admission to general upper secondary education on the basis of foreign education

Find out whether you can start general upper secondary education, i.e. STX, HTX, HHX, and HF programmes.

About admission in general

To apply for admission to a particular programme, you should contact the school where you want to study.

You should ask a student advisor at the school about entry requirements, any supplementary courses and opportunities for credit transfer.

Admission requirements

Your foreign school education must be on a level with a completed Year 9 or 10 of Danish basic education.

It is the headmaster who decides whether you qualify for admission. You may be required to take an admission test.

As an applicant from a foreign school you are eligible for admission to STX, HHX, HTX and the HF, if your education level can be equated with a Year 9 or 10 of Danish basic education according to an assessment by the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education. In addition, there are a number of specific requirements (see below).

The Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education can make an assessment if you have a completed foreign qualification. If your foreign education is not complete, the Agency can assist the school in interpreting your documents.

In order to get the assessment, you or the school must submit an application to the Agency:

Applicants from Nordic countries

There are special rules if you are from Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands or Greenland: You are eligible for admission if you have completed basic education in your home country and have qualifications equivalent to the requirements for students who have attended Danish school. In addition, there are a number of specific requirements.

The Nordic countries have agreed to give each other's students access to their general as well as vocational secondary schools under the same conditions as nationals.

Applicants from the European Schools

You are eligible for admission if you have attended one of the European Schools and have been promoted to class 5 of the secondary school. In addition, there are a number of specific requirements (see below).

Specific requirements

Your school education must also meet the specific requirements in the form of 2 to 4 years of second foreign language studies (French or German as an examination subject) and other requirements for access to secondary education, including a concrete assessment and, in some cases, an admission test.

It is the headmaster who decides whether you qualify for admission.
