The Programmes in Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the EU's Research and Innovation programme with funding of nearly 75 billion euro available over 7 years (2014 to 2020). Funding is allocated to three different pillars which define the main areas where funding can be obtained.

Horizon 2020 is made up of three pillars: "Excellent science", "Industrial leadership" and "Societal challenges".

Each pillar has programmes and under these there is a number of calls which outline what kind of topics and projects the European Commission will fund.

Horizon 2020 also encompass some cross-disciplinary initiatives, which cover more programmes or are located outside the pillar structure.

In addition, a number of research institutes are associated to Horizon 2020. Institutes such as the Joint Research Centre and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology support the European Commision with research.
