Innovation Centre Denmark in São Paulo

The innovation centre creates contact between the Danish and the Brazilian business communities and research- and innovation systems. The purpose of this is to strengthen Danish research, education, innovation- and policy-development. The main focus is on food products, biorefining and health IT.

Why Brazil?

Brazil has the fifth-largest area of any country in the world, and within a few decades the economy is expected to be among the seven largest in the world. The Brazilian growth is largely driven by a massive rise in private consumption as well as public and private investments.

In recent years Brazil has increased the public investments in research and education. Today, Brazil spends a little over one percent of GDP on research and development, with a goal of increasing the investments to 1.8 percent in 2014. In the period from 2000 to 2010 alone the public spending on R&D quadrupled to approximately 16 bn. BRL (the equivalent of approximately 45 bn. DKK).

Research and education collaboration

Since 2011 different Danish actors have entered into a series of broad framework agreements with relevant Brazilian partners, creating the foundation for, among other things, student-exchange programmes and concrete research and development cooperations within different areas such as food products, agriculture, biotechnology and –energy, ICT, maritime educations etc.

The Danish universities participate in the Brazilian government's mobility programme "Science without Borders".

The Top Talent Denmark programme has run in Brazil since 2013. In 2014 the usual concept Denmark Days was expanded with cluster events which were very positively received. A committed network of alumni has been created, which is a big help in promoting both Top Talent Denmark events and education stays in Denmark.

The bilateral agreements between the Ministry of Higher Education and Science and Brazilian actors are negotiated through the innovation attaché.
