Final 2013 intake figures surpass all records

Education programmes aimed at the private sector in particular have seen greater numbers in the second intake round for higher education. Overall intake in 2013 surpasses all previous records.

More people than ever before are seeking out higher education.

The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education reported a record intake number for higher education on 30 July – 63,525 applicants.

Minister for Science, Innovation and Higher Education Morten Østergaard is pleased to hear that following the second intake round on 1 October, the final tally has increased by 1,221 since July.

A total of 64,746 new students have therefore been accepted to higher education programmes in 2013. This is the greatest number to date and 2 per cent more than in 2012, according to figures from the Ministry of the final distribution of new students.

Minister Morten Østergaard is pleased with the figures, which support the Danish government’s ambition to create the most educated generation ever.

- This year’s impressive intake shows that young people are increasingly interested in improving themselves and creating good opportunities for themselves in the labour market. In return, I promise students that in the coming year, the government will focus on further developing the quality and intensity of programmes so that young people may have the best opportunities upon graduating and that our many new graduates are also the best educated ones, says Morten Østergaard.

The greatest intake was found on engineering programmes. Professional bachelor’s degree programmes saw the greatest growth in the technical field, while bachelor’s degree programmes saw increased growth in the technical sciences. Business academies have also seen increased intake in the AP degree programme in Service, Hospitality and Tourism Management in the second round.

Professional bachelor’s degree programmes had the greatest net growth between first and second intake rounds. The technical field saw 602 more students admitted, primarily on bachelor of engineering programmes and construction management programmes – an increase of 17 per cent.

437 more students have been admitted to courses within the pedagogic field, which corresponds to an increase of five per cent. The greatest numbers were seen in the pedagogue and teacher training programmes.

An extra 309 students were accepted on the teacher training programme, or a 12 per cent increase, which is significantly higher than the average net growth in the second intake round.

- I am pleased that teacher training education has seen increased interest in the second intake round. It’s a sign that the message of a new, more relevant and more attractive teacher training education is being spread to applicants. The final admission figures to teacher training education programmes are still lower than last year, but I expect that the more stringent admission requirements and a more challenging programme will reduce the traditional large drop-out rates in the programme, says Morten Østergaard.

Education programmes in North Jutland have accepted the most students in the second round. Figures in the region, increased by 5 per cent compared to 2 per cent nationally.

Figures from the second intake round

  • A total of 6,830 admitted to an education programme in the second round. 5,094 of these students are ”known” from the first intake round.
  • Of the 5,094 students, 1,195 declined their offer of a programme in the first round, while the remaining students did not succeed in gaining a place on their chosen course in the first round, but were admitted to vacant places in the second round.
  • 1,736 of those admitted in the second round are new students who were not involved in first round admittance.

About the figures

  • These figures only relate to programmes that accept intake through the Danish Coordinated Application System. For example, artistic programmes are not included. The overall annual intake figures can therefore be greater.
  • The Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher Education accounts for the results of annual intake twice during the year. On 30 July, the first round of intake sees letters sent out to applicants with an acceptance or rejection.
  • Between 30 July and the beginning of the study year, students in the second intake round can decline places offered and additional students can be accepted to vacant places. The final overall intake is calculated ever year in October.
