Future master’s degree programmes at Danish Universities

A political agreement between the government, Green Left, Liberal Alliance, Denmark Democrats, and the Conservative Party means changes to the master’s degree programmes at Danish universities.

The changes entail rolling out new types of master’s degree programmes which could affect students who begin an undergraduate programme at Danish university in 2025.

Currently a Danish master’s degree typically consists of 2 years of full-time studies (120 ECTS). In the future some master’s degrees will be 1¼ years of full-time studies (75 ECTS). In addition to this there will be more options for master’s degree students to select a programme that combines work and studying in different ways.

All students who complete an undergraduate programme will – as is the case today – be guaranteed admission to a master’s degree in natural progression of their undergraduate programme. Some students will be guaranteed admission to a master’s degree of 2 years of full-time studies (120 ECTS), while others will be guaranteed admission to one of the new master’s degree of 1 ¼ years of full-time studies (75 ECTS).

The political agreement is expected to be passed as legislation in the first half of 2025. It is not yet clear which master’s degrees will be affected.

New master’s degrees will be developed and approved from 2025 to 2032. Information about the new master’s degree programmes will be published on relevant university websites.
