Celebrating 150 years of Japan-Denmark diplomatic relations and cooperation

This year marks the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan. The anniversary will be celebrated on 16 November 2017 with a celebratory research event in Tokyo.

  • When November 16, 2017 from 09:30 AM to 04:45 PM
  • Where Tokyo International Forum, Tokyo, Japan

It is said in Japan, that the Danes helped bring the Land of the Rising Sun into contact with the rest of the world. The Danish telegraph company GN Store Nord connected Japan by telegraph to the Western world in 1871 by establishing the first underwater cable from the Japanese islands to the continent. The telegraph connection continued through Siberia to Northern Europe and established and important foundation for Danish-Japanese relations and collaboration.

Photonics – the technology used for fiber-optic telecommunication, which has replaced telegraph communication – is still a great area of common interest for both Denmark and Japan. On 16 November 2017,  150 years after establishing the first connection between the two countries, Danish and Japanese researchers will meet again to focus on photonics, communication and cooperation. The scientific seminar ”Photonics Creating the Future”, is organised by the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education and the Embassy of Denmark in Japan.

The seminar marks 150 years of relations between Denmark and Japan, and photonics has been chosen as the theme because of the long history that the two countries share within this area.

Programme and registration

The seminar will present former and current Danish-Japanese research collaborations within photonics and will also explore future research relations between the two countries. The programme includes presentations from leading photonics researchers from both Denmark and Japan. Among the Danish speakers are:

  • Dr. Palle Jeppesen, Emeritus Professor, DTU Fotonics
  • Dr. Lars-Ulrik Aaen Andersen, Head of Department, DTU Fotonics
  • Dr. Kristian Elmholdt Stubkjær, Head of Department, DTU Electrical Engineering
  • Dr. Jan W. Thomsen, Head of Department, Niels Bohr Institute
  • Dr. Birthe Irene Dinesen, professor, Center for Sensory-Motor Interaction, Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University.

The seminar will conclude with a reception at the Danish embassy in Tokyo.

Deadline for registration for seminar is 08 November 2017. Go to registration page here.
