Anniversary event: Ten years of excellent research in Europe

March 21, 2017
Last week, the 10 year anniversary of the European Research Council (ERC) was celebrated in the Old Banquet Hall of the University of Copenhagen. The minister for the Ministry of Higher Education and Science Søren Pind participated in celebrating excellent research in Europe and Denmark.

Ten years ago, the ERC was established and since then the council has awarded grants to almost 7,000 researchers. In 2017, the council marks its ten year anniversary, and this was celebrated in Copenhagen with speeches, presentations and short films about different aspects of the ERC. It was not just the ERC being celebrated, as the festive event also paid tribute to the original ideas of researchers, and the many Danish researchers who have received prestigious grants from the ERC. Recipients of ERC grants in 2015 and 2016 were honoured with flowers.

150 ERC grants to Denmark

Over the last ten years, researchers in Denmark have competed with researchers from all over the world to obtain prestigious five-year contracts with the ERC. It is a competition concerning original ideas, courage, curiosity, and excellent research. And the Danes are doing very well in the competition. In ten years, 150 researchers in Denmark have received the coveted grants. Their research covers all scientific disciplines, from church history, language, computer games, financial markets to malaria medicine and nano research. The ERC funds all research areas if excellence is a main aspect.
