Great opportunities for international drone collaboration for Danish researchers and businesses
The Danish innovation centres have already launched number of initiatives to utilise the great potential.
It is not just public authorities and commercial businesses that have become more and more interested in drones. There is also significant growth in the drone area in research and development. And according to a new status report from the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, there are great international opportunities for Danish companies and researchers. The report examines the seven countries where Denmark's innovation centres are located.
The report shows that the US and China in particular are leading R&D nations in the drone field, while Germany and South Korea have experienced strong growth in the number of research publications on drones.
Even though the number of Danish drone publications is modest, the report also shows that Danish drone research has a high impact and that Denmark ranks strongly for international cooperation.
Several of the seven Danish innovation centres around the world have already started on initiatives to increase cooperation in drone research. For example, the innovation centres in Munich and Seoul held workshops on drone technology for Danish, German and Korean drone researchers.
The status report is one of the National Drone Strategy's 23 initiatives, where more than DKK 80 million has already been earmarked for research and development in the drone field, and where Denmark's first drone airport opened in Odense earlier this year.
Facts from the report:
- Researchers from the US published 1,110 drone publications in 2016. Followed by China with 866, South Korea with 226, and Germany with 211.
- The number of drone publications increased by 40 per cent between 2013 and 2016.
- 63 per cent of Danish drone publications are part of an international collaboration.
