Danish research strengthened by Danish Council for Independent Research
According to a new international evaluation, the Danish Council for Independent Research (DFF) plays a key role in the Danish research landscape. The evaluation has been carried out by a panel of six international leading experts. The panel concluded that provision of grants by DFF to the most talented researchers has a great impact on Danish success and that the research council receives support and recognition from the Danish research landscape.
The evaluation report also contains a number of recommendations for DFF, the Danish government and the Danish research society in general. Minister for Higher Education and Science Sofie Carsten Nielsen states that the evaluation is a valuable tool in the efforts to maintain the international position of strength of Danish research.
- The evaluation of the Danish Council for Independent Research confirms that the council plays a crucial role in the Danish research landscape – but that we also have a great task ahead of us if Danish research is to continue to remain among the best in the world. This includes improving efforts to identify and support talented female researchers. Denmark misses out on a significant share of the collective talent pool when the full potential of research environments is not realised, says Sofie Carsten Nielsen.
The panel also saw the potential to improve efforts in providing better conditions for cross-disciplinary research and in promoting international mobility among young researchers.
The international evaluation panel was led by Dr. Wilhelm Krull of the Volkswagen Foundation. Dr. Krull also led an evaluation of the Danish National Research Council in 2013.
The evaluation included a thorough analysis of DFF research results and interviews with a wide range of Danish research stakeholders including university management, private foundations and many young and established researchers.
The evaluation is being presented at a research conference on 23 October at Moltkes Palace in Copenhagen.
