Agreement Reached on Distribution of Globalisation Fund

October 29, 2010
The Government entered an agreement on 29 October 2010 with the Danish People's Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Social-Liberal Party on distribution of the Globalisation Fund for 2011.

The parties agree that there is a need to utilise the globalisation funds for research – to support growth through knowledge and encourage companies to invest.

As part of the agreement, DKK 400 million (€53.6 million) has been allocated to raise base funding for the universities. Of this, DKK 100 million (€13.4 million) will be allocated to a match fund, which will strengthen the incentive for universities to attract external funding. Funding has been allocated to the fund for 2011 and 2012.

Furthermore, the parties have decided that the allotted funds for the Danish National Research Foundation in 2012 will be reviewed in negotiations for the Globalisation Fund in 2011.

A further DKK 767 million (€102.8 million) has been allocated to strategic research. The parties have chosen to prioritise this within three key research areas – energy and environment research, health, environmental factors and welfare technology research and research into sustainable and competitive agricultural production. Finally, and also within a strategic framework, DKK 28 million (€3.7 million) has been allocated to education research.

As a small country in a global world, Denmark has a special challenge to attract and retain the greatest research talents. To support this agenda, the parties behind the agreement have decided to allocate DKK 100 million (€13.4 million) to attract research talent in the period 2011-2012.

It is a further challenge that the majority of Danish companies are small or medium enterprises. If we are to succeed in globalisation, it is crucial that our companies have access to new research. Therefore the parties have allocated DKK 131 million (€17.5 million) to ensure the business community can avail of new knowledge by strengthening a number of existing initiatives within innovation and knowledge transfer.
