Pilot Project for Paperless Exams

November 10, 2010
Handwritten examinations submitted on carbon copy paper will be a thing of the past. As part of the "Digital Roads to Growth" programme, the Science Ministry has launched a pilot project for paperless examinations

Aarhus University will play a central role in developing a solution for digital examinations, with students bringing their own laptop computers and also with a focus on preventing cheating.

In time, universities can further develop and spread the solution so digital examinations can be introduced to all universities.

– I have a vision of students having access to a fully digitalised university from application to education to examination. Young people are used to using IT every day. It is only natural that exams respond to student norms. We must become better at utilising digital opportunities and carbon copy paper in exams should be a thing of the past before too long, says Science Minister Charlotte Sahl-Madsen.
– It is crucial for Aarhus University that exam solutions are welcomed by all students in Denmark. This is an area that interests us and one that we at Aarhus University have already invested considerable resources in. We therefore look forward to cooperating with the Science Ministry on the pilot project, which is in line with Aarhus University's digitalisation strategy and desire to expand modern IT-based teaching methods and exam reform, says Søren E. Frandsen, pro-rector at Aarhus University.

The pilot project will be tested in a particular area of examination at Aarhus University during 2011. The development process is expected to begin in Spring 2011. All universities and student organisations can contribute to the project via an expert working group.

In June 2010, the Science Ministry in cooperation with all Danish universities completed a preliminary process about the possibility of expanding the use of digital examinations at universities. The report contains a number of recommendations to strengthen the digitalisation of written exams at universities. This pilot project is one of those recommendations.
