About the publication

A major conference on the need for establishing a European Research Council was held during the Danish EU Presidency in 2002. The conference showed that all over Europe there was considerable interest in the issue.

Following the Council of Ministers' discussion of the idea, an international expert group chaired by Professor Federico Mayor, Spain, was established on the initiative of the Danish Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Helge Sander. The expert group was commissioned to analyse the options for a possible creation of a European Research Council.

The deliberations of the expert group have resulted in the report: "The European Research Council – A Cornerstone in the European Research Area".
