Almost 55,000 apply for higher education via quota 2
A total of 54,932 people have applied for enrolment to higher education this year via the quota 2 option by the noon deadline on March 15. The final quota 2 applicant numbers will be determined by the start of April. Compared to last year's quota 2 figures, there are 3710 more applicants – an increase of 7.2 per cent.
Minister for Higher Education and Science Ulla Tørnæs recommends that educational institutions plan enrolment in such a way so the most qualified and motivated students are enrolled on their programmes.
- I find it important that our enrolment system ensures young people are ready to complete the education they sign up for. There must be a good match between the students and the requirements of the programme. This can help us reduce the educational drop-out rates, which are expensive for society and delay the progress of the individual student.
- The best way to plan enrolment can differ from institution to institution. For some programmes, grades are the best planning tool. Meanwhile, others are more suited to interviews and tests or a combination of the two. It is up to the individual institution to determine which is most appropriate, says Ulla Tørnæs.
For example, a recently published evaluation shows that drop-out rates on teacher training programmes have been reduced after minimum grade requirement of 7 was introduced, with enrolment interviews for applications with a lower grade point average than 7.
The minister also recommends that young people carefully consider their choice of education – also ahead of the July 5 deadline for quota 1 applications.
- Education is the key to freedom, but knowing which doors it opens is not a trivial matter. I see it as a very important task that students are given the best possible information about their job opportunities following their education. I would therefore advise all young people applying to programmes to carefully consider the job opportunities provided by their education, says Ulla Tørnæs.
An account of the distribution of applications by field and type of education will be published on ufm.dk at the start of April 2016. The final total number of applicants to higher education in 2016 is first available after July 5.
About quota 2 applications
- As all applicants have applied digitally via the optagelse.dk portal, the provisional figures can already be published. The final figures will likely increase as they will include applicants who applied without using a NemID login and applicants who are exempt from applying digitally.
- An increase in the number of quota 2 applicants does not generally lead to an increase in the total number of applicants. However, the quota 2 figures in recent years have been an indicator for a general increase in the total number of applicants.
