Germany – closely followed by the UK – is the preferred partner for Danish researchers and innovators in the EU framework programme for R&I, Horizon 2020. When/if the UK leaves Horizon, German knowledge institutions and companies will become even more important as potential partners in the next framework programme, Horizon Europe from 2021 and onwards.

Background info on DK-DE cooperation in Horizon 2020

  • Germany is Denmark's no. 1 partner in Horizon 2020 with 1270 signed contracts and 5797 collaborations between one DK partner and one DE partner (as of November 2020). This was also the case in FP6 (786 collaborative projects) and FP7 (1259 collaborative projects).
  • The main themes for DK-DE R&I-collaboration are Health, Food, ICT, Energy and Environment.
  • After Germany, the UK, Spain, France, Italy and the Netherlands are Denmark’s favourite partners in Horizon 2020.
  • During Horizon 2020, Danish partners average a higher success rate in applications with partners from Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in Gernmany respectively, than in general applications.
  • Historically, Germany has performed particularly well in technology-focused programs, i.e. areas such as ICT, Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials and Production Technology, Space Technology, and Transportation.
  • In Horizon Europe, German partners could be expected to play a leading role within green technology, including areas such as battery technology and new fuels. In addition, Germany has a number of leading environments in artificial intelligence and robotics.

The Danish Innovation Centre in Munich is located in one of Europe's strongest knowledge regions and is characterised by a close interaction with research institutions and companies. A special focus area is Industry 4.0, where the southern German federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are well represented, with leading knowledge environments and close connections to both high-tech production companies (including in the automotive industry) and the so-called "hidden champion" SMEs, who are world-leaders within their niche.
