Record levels of EU funding for internationalisation of Danish research education

76 talented researchers and two PhD programmes have received a total of DKK 170 million from the EU's framework programme for research and innovation, Horizon 2020. The funding will help make researcher education even more international and promote researchers' career development in Denmark.

The European Commission has recently contacted Danish researchers and research institutions regarding their applications for a mobility grant (Individual Fellowships) or a researcher education programme (COFUND). Both are part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions in Horizon 2020, which supports researcher education and career development across all research disciplines.

Danish record

Danish researcher institutions have secured 76 mobility grants from the two programmes, together with funding to establish two PhD programmes. It corresponds to Denmark receiving EUR 22.8 million, or DKK 170 million. This marks a Danish record for these two funding instruments, which provided Danish institutions and companies with DKK 140 million last year.

Attracting international talent

An EU mobility grant allows researchers from abroad to develop their careers in Denmark or a Danish researcher to return to Denmark after time spent in a foreign university. It strengthens the international dimension in their scientific careers.

Among the 76 grant recipients are researchers from Italy and China, who can now pursue their scientific ambitions in Denmark within wide-ranging areas such as environmentally friendly waste water cleaning facilities, to models for a secure internet, and welfare effects in the European education system.

With EU funding for researcher education programmes, research institutions in Denmark can boost the quality of their existing programmes or develop brand new ones. The aim is to create high quality international, inter-sectoral, and interdisciplinary researcher education programmes.
