New Danish-Californian Consortium for Healthier Foods About to Start

January 14, 2009
Danish and American food scientists to collaborate in the fight against malnutrition and lifestyle diseases such as obesity.

For the first time ever, a strong research alliance has been created between four Danish universities and the entire California State university system. In the United States, the leading university in the field of agriculture and foods, UC Davis in California, is participating.

Denmark is represented by the universities of Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense and the Technical University of Denmark. The Centre for Advanced Food Studies at the University of Copenhagen is in charge of coordinating the Danish effort.

– Denmark has a tradition of leading the way in food research. We should continue to do so. This collaboration will help us maintain our position. At the same time I hope that it might be a role model for similar initiatives in other areas in the future, says Helge Sander, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation.

The consortium is a unique opportunity for Danish research to get into contact with foreign enterprises.

– In many ways, Danish food research is on the way to becoming more international. The consortium will give us a fantastic new and broad platform with increased benefits for our Danish industrial partners, with whom we already have an excellent collaboration, says Alan Friis from the Centre for Advanced Food Studies, who will coordinate the Danish part of the effort.

The Americans also look forward to the collaboration. They are convinced that the consortium will bring many new results in its wake.

– For many years, the Danes have been in the lead within food research, while our knowledge competencies focus to a higher degree on how food influences the health of the body. By combining the two, we get an enormous synergy effect, says Dr. M.R.C. Greenwood, Head of the Foods for Health Institute at UC Davis, former science adviser of President Bill Clinton.

The consortium is a concrete result of several years' collaboration between UC Davis and Innovation Center Denmark in Silicon Valley under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
