Timeline

The timeline provides a brief history of nuclear energy research and radioactive waste disposal in Denmark since the first research reactor was commissioned at Risø National Laboratory in 1957.

2022: Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland publishes a study of characterisation and evaluation of geological properties and conditions at 500 metres depth in Denmark.

2020: Danish Health Authority notifies Denmark's National Programme under Council Directive 2011/70/EURATOM on the responsible and safe management of spent fuel and radioactive waste.

2018: On 15 May, Danish Parliament adopted resolution B90/2018 which provides the policy points to be implemented in order to have a Danish nuclear waste repository solution in operation by no later than 2073.

2016: The report of further analyses of a long-term storage facility for radioactive waste in Denmark was delivered by the end of the year. The Minister for Higher Education and Science presented the report to the Danish Parliament for resumed political discussions of a final decision on how to store and deposit radioactive waste in Denmark following the decommissioning of the nuclear facilities at Risø National Laboratory.

2015: An environmental assessment of six possible sites for the location of a radioactive waste repository is published. This coincides with the presentation of a technical study of a long-term storage facility. It is decided to carry out further studies on the safety, economy and operation of a long-term storage facility. The environmental assessment of the repository facility is discontinued in order to await the results of the further studies on the storage facility. On 28 June, the responsibility for handling the matter is transferred from Ministry of Health to Ministry of Higher Education and Science following a general election.

2013: Local area-studies of six possible locations for a radioactive waste repository are published by the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland.

2011: A pre-feasibility study of a radioactive waste repository is published by Danish Decommissioning.

2009: The Danish Parliament adopts a decision to execute the further programming of a radioactive waste repository. A pre-feasibility study is solicited.

2008: A technical study of a radioactive waste repository is presented by an inter-ministerial working group to the Ministry of Health.

2003: The Danish Parliament adopts a resolution to decommission the nuclear research facilities at Risø National Laboratory by 2023 and to solicit a technical study of a radioactive waste respository.

2000: The last nuclear facility at Risø National Laboratory is taken out of operation.

1985: The Danish Parliament adopts a resolution not to include nuclear power in the national energy mix.

1957-1964: The nuclear research facilities at Risø National Laboratory are put into operation. The purpose is to explore and develop the potential of nuclear energy in power production.
