Artificial Intelligence in Research and Innovation

Artificial intelligence has been a central topic in the Danish research and innovation policy debate in 2024. DFIR has hosted debates on the framework for the development and use of AI, shedding light on opportunities, risks, and the ethical challenges of applying AI at universities.

Debate Series on Danish Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence

In 2023 and 2024, the Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy (DFIR) held a series of debates discussing the potentials and risks of artificial intelligence in Denmark's research and innovation ecosystem. The debate series was organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Digitalization, the Danish Pioneer Center for Artificial Intelligence, and the Danish Knowledge Center for Foundations.

The goal of the debate series was to enrich the public conversation on the use of artificial intelligence within research and innovation. This includes dialogues taking place at lunch tables in innovative companies and Danish universities, as well as in public discourse and political discussions.

Report: Artificial Intelligence in Danish Research and Innovation – Cases, Potentials, and Risks

DFIR commissioned the Center for Research Analysis (CFA) to prepare a report on cases, potentials, and risks associated with the use of generative AI (genAI) in research and innovation. The report also presents findings from a February 2024 survey among researchers at Danish universities regarding their use of genAI and their assessment of the ethical challenges it poses in the five stages of the research process: idea generation, research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination.

The report indicates that while researchers at Danish universities recognize the benefits of genAI, its current use is limited. To mark the report’s launch, DFIR, in collaboration with the Digital Research Center Denmark (DIREC), is organizing a debate on January 29, 2025. The event will explore barriers to strengthening research capacity, share diverse perspectives, and promote best practices for the responsible integration of genAI.

Debate Meeting and Workshop: Artificial Intelligence in Danish Research and Innovation – Cases, Potentials, and Risks

To launch CFA’s new report on cases, potentials, and risks of using generative AI (genAI) in research and innovation, DFIR is organizing a workshop and subsequent debate in collaboration with the Digital Research Center Denmark (DIREC). These events will provide a platform to share perspectives on best practices for responsibly integrating genAI.

DFIR has published three briefs as part of the project
