HM Queen Mary and the Minister for Higher Education and Science award prizes to leading researchers

The prizes will be presented by HM Queen Mary and the Minister for Higher Education and Science, Christina Egelund, at the Black Diamond in Copenhagen.

Anyone in doubt about the breadth of elite research in Denmark need only look at this year’s five recipients of the Elite Research Award. Their research fields range from military decision-making processes, snake venom, and fertility to quantum physics and glass technology. What they all have in common is their affiliation with Danish universities and their pursuit of research at the highest level.

This year’s recipients are being honoured for their research at an award ceremony at the Black Diamond in Copenhagen, at which each will receive DKK 1.2 million in recognition of their work and its significance for society. DKK 1 million goes to the recipient’s research activities, while DKK 200,000 is a personal recognition grant.

In addition to the five the Elite Research Awards, 17 talented PhD students are being awarded an the Elite Research Travel Grant of DKK 200,000. This grant is to support extended periods of study at the world’s leading research institutions.

The Minister for Higher Education and Science, Christina Egelund, comments:

 - What characterizes this year’s Elite Research Award recipients is their thirst       for knowledge, their curiosity, and a burning desire to discover something new. They are dedicated to finding the next small piece of the vast scientific puzzle. Moreover, they are among the most skilled researchers in their    respective fields, and contribute to solving some of the challenges facing our society. In addition to their significant research efforts, we also recognise them for serving as role models, inspiring other young researchers in their daily work. Congratulations to both the Elite Research Award recipients and the talented PhD students.

• There are two categories of awards under the the Elite Research Award scheme: the Elite Research Awards and the Elite Research Travel Grants.
• The scheme highlights top-tier research in Denmark, and raises awareness of its high quality.
• An EliteForsk Travel Scholarship enables exceptionally talented PhD students to undertake extended periods of study at the world's leading research institutions. Up to 20 EliteForsk Travel Scholarships are awarded annually.
