Webinar 2: ESA Strategy 2040 Elevate the future of Europe: Protect our Planet

The second ESA webinar on “Protect our Planet” in the ESA Strategy 2040: Elevate the future of European Space will focus on ESA’s Earth Observation programmes as well as on the Space Safety Programme.

The sustainability of life on Earth is under increasing threat due to climate change and biodiversity loss, primarily driven by human activities. Europe, being the fastest warming continent—with temperatures rising at approximately twice the global average faces a critical challenge in combating these existential threats.

National strategies highlight the transformative role of space-based assets in protecting the environment and managing resources sustainably. Solutions are also needed to sustainably steward the near-Earth environment to avoid that it becomes unusable in the future due to the rapidly increasing danger of space debris.  ESA is committed to developing a zero debris approach to its missions. Achieving this objective will require new technical solutions to be developed and industrial design processes, and operations, to be adapted.

A third sustainability risk is coming directly from space in the form of space weather events and asteroids. Solar storms can endanger astronauts and satellites and disrupt communications ESA is committed to developing technology and capability to provide owners and operators of critical spaceborne and ground-based infrastructure timely and accurate information to enable mitigation of the adverse impacts of space weather.

No registration is needed for the webinar. The link gives direct access to the webinar in a Zoom meeting.
