Council members 2020

The Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy (DFiR) consists of a chairman and eight members appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Science. The Council was appointed from 1 April 2023 for a three-year period.

The members, including the chairperson, shall be appointed in their personal capacities by the Minister of Higher Education and Science following an open announcement. While serving on the Danish Council for Research and Innovation Policy, the Council members, including the chairperson, may not at the same time serve on the board of directors of Independent Research Fund Denmark, the board of trustees of the Danish National Research Foundation, the board of directors of Innovation Fund Denmark, committees under Independent Research Fund Denmark or committees under Innovation Fund Denmark.

The Council shall be composed such that it represents experience from: 1) research, technological development and innovation in the public sector, including public-private research and innovation partnerships; 2) research, technological development and innovation in the private sector, including SMEs; 3) research, technological development and innovation at an international level; and 4) application and commercialisation of research results.

Members of the Council, including the chairperson, shall be appointed for a period of up to three years. Reappointment shall be possible until a member has served for a total of six years.


Frede Blaabjerg (chairman)

Frede Blaabjerg is Professor, PhD at Department of Energy Technology, Aalborg University and a former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Medicine at Aalborg University.

Frede Blaabjerg has been Chairman of the Danish Council for Technical Sciences and he has been a Board member of the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation, Danish Council for Strategic Research, Vice President of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences and is now President of IEEE Power Electronics Society. He is further an international member of the Swiss research council.

Frede Blaabjerg is appointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023.  


Christina Aabo

Christina Aabo is former Head of R&D, Offshore at Ørsted. She holds a Master’s Degree in Science and Engineering and is a specialist in technology transfer to third world countries. 

Christina Aabo is a Board member of Lindø Offshore Renewables Center, the technological alliance Engineer the Future, Cotes A/S, Hydratech Industries A/S, and a member of Bergen Offshore Wind Scientific Advisory Board, Megavind, the R&D platform for Danish wind energy and ETIP Wind and an advisor for the EU on R&D funding of wind energy. She serves as an expert in the panels of the InnoBooster og InnoFounder Experienced programmes in Innovation Fund Denmark.

Christina Aabo is appointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023. 


Søren Bech

Søren Bech is Head of Research and Development at Bang & Olufsen A/S and Professor at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design at Aalborg University. Søren Bech holds an MScEE and a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark.

Søren Bech is member of a number of Boards including the Thinktank DEA, DI's board for research and education, the innovation network "Danish Sound" and Struer Business Park.

Søren Bech is reappointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023.   


Mette Birkedal Bruun

Mette Birkedal Bruun is Professor of church history at the Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen and the leader of Centre for Privacy Studies, a Centre of Excellence under the Danish National Research Foundation. She holds a PhD in church history from Aarhus University and a Doctor's degree in theology from the University of Copenhagen.    

Besides a thorough interest in cross-disciplinary research Mette Birkedal Bruun has been a member of the Research and Innovation Council at the University of Copenhagen. She has been awarded the Carlsberg Foundation Research Prize, and she is a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.

Mette Birkedal Bruun is appointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023.


Jes Broeng

Jes Broeng is Professor and Director of DTU Entrepreneurship. Jes Broeng holds a Master's degree in Science and Engineering and a PhD Degree from Technical University Denmark, and he been a visiting professor at UC Berkeley.

Jes Broeng is co-founder of several hightech enterprises, and he serves on the board of several companies Norlase, FaunaPhotonics and PreSeed Ventures. Jes Broeng is a member of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences, a fellow of SPIE (the International Society for Optics and Photonics), and part of an international expert group that advises the European Commission on innovation.

Jes Broeng has received a number of awards, including the European Optics Prize and DTU's Innovation Prize.

Jes Broeng is appointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023. 


Anna Haldrup

Anna Haldrup is Head of Department at the Department of Food Science at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. Anna Haldrup holds a Master's degree in Agronomy and an Industrial PhD from Danisco Biotechnology and the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Denmark (now part of the University of Copenhagen). Previously to her present position at the University of Copenhagen she was Director of Research Support at Carlsberg. Anna Haldrup is member of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences.

Anna Haldrup is reappointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023.   


Søren Rud Keiding

Søren Rud Keiding, Professor, DSc, is Director of Aarhus Institute for Advanced Studies at Aarhus University.

Søren Rud Keiding has been Vice Dean for research at Science and Technology, Aarhus Universitet. His prime research fields are water and laser technology. Søren Rud Keiding is a former Chairman of the Danish Research Fund | Technology and Production Sciences.

Søren Rud Keiding is reappointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023. 


Kristine Niss

Kristine Niss is Professor in Physics at Roskilde University. She holds a PhD Degree from Université Sud, France.

Kristine Niss’ research field is experimental studies of thermodynamics, structure and dynamics of liquids. In 2018 Kristine Niss was awarded the prize Women in Physics as an outstanding role model and the Research Prize of the Danish Association of Masters and PhDs. Kristine Niss is chair of the Natural Science Study Board at Roskilde University at Roskilde University.

Kristine Niss is a member of The Young Academy (2015-2020), as chair in 2018, and she is a member of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences.

Kristine Niss is appointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023. 


Thomas Sinkjær

Thomas Sinkjær is professor at the Department of Health Science and Technology, Aalborg University and Secretary General at the Royal Danish Society of Sciences and Letters.

Thomas Sinkjær holds an MScEE and PhD Degree from Aalborg University and a MD degree from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Thomas Sinkjær is member of a number of Danish and international research and innovation organizations and foundations. Thomas Sinkjær has been Director of the Danish National Research Foundation, Head of Talent Programmes at the Lundbeck Foundation and Reseach Director at the Villum Foundation..

Thomas Sinkjær is reappointed from 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2023.
